Reshaping New Orleans: Criminal Justice
The program will examine the impact of New Orleans recent law change that shifts arrests on municipal charges to summons and warnings, as well as the use of drug and mental health treatment as part of the criminal justice system.
Since an estimated 70 to 80 percent of all charges screened by the Orleans District attorney’s office have a drug component, the program examines trends in coerced drug treatment, which has a much higher success rate than voluntary treatment.
The program is produced by Paula Pendarvis. Executive producer is Marcia Kavanaugh, the Director of Local Initiatives for WYES.
