CHRISTMAS IN NEW ORLEANS
Premiered November 2006
Mr. Bingle, downtown New Orleans Christmas decorations, rare snowfalls, and bonfires along the Mississippi River ----all are part of the new WYES documentary CHRISTMAS IN NEW ORLEANS debuting Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at 7:00 pm.
Way before “Popeyes Fried Chicken” founder Al Copeland mounted his mega Christmas display, there was the Centanni home. Copeland was inspired to mount his own version drawn from his childhood memories of visits to the home. Charmingly eclectic, not only did the Centanni's exhibit feature a life-size Nativity scene but also included an elaborate Santa's workshop and a papier mache' elephant.
Among many sharing local Christmas memories are New Orleans music stars Irma Thomas, “Deacon John” Moore, author Anne Rice, former New Orleans Mayor Moon Landrieu, historian Sally Kittredge Reeves and artist George Schmidt.
We are completing a program that we were actually working on when Katrina hit.”notes producer Peggy Scott Laborde. “Fortunately, we were able to pick up where we left off since most of our footage was upstairs at WYES, which is located in the Lakeview neighborhood. Of course just about everything downstairs was destroyed so I'm grateful and relieved we will be able to finish our show.”
The program is also hosted by Peggy Scot Laborde. Larry Roussarie is the editor.
CHRISTMAS IN NEW ORLEANS is made possible by the Producers' Circle, a group of viewers who contribute towards local productions and Whitney National Bank.
