Volunteers Needed to Help Restore Cypress Forests at Jean Lafitte National Park’s Barataria PreserveRegister Here

The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana and Jean Lafitte National Park invite you to participate in a cypress planting project along the Bayou Segnette Waterway in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The objective of the project is to protect marsh ecosystems from physical erosion threats and from invasion by Chinese tallow. The restored area will also provide critical habit for wildlife. Volunteers will plant 800 cypress trees during this two-day event.We are also looking for volunteers to unload and transport trees when they are delivered before the planting event. We will need volunteers to help unload the trees from an 18 wheeler truck and transport them, by boat, a short distance up a canal and unload them at the planting site. This will help prepare the trees to be planted two weeks later.

Transporting Cypress Trees:

When:	Friday November 30th
	9:00 a.m. to no later than 2:00 p.m.
Where:	Jones Point, Marrero, LA

Planting Cypress Trees:

When:	Friday December 7th from 9:00 a.m. to no later than 4:00 p.m.
	Saturday December 8th from 9:00 a.m. to no later than 4:00 p.m.
Where:	Barataria Preserve Visitors Center, Marrero, LA

Volunteers can register for one or multiple days

Directions and additional information about what to bring to the event will be provided to registered volunteers via e-mail a few days prior to the event.

All planting equipment (gloves, shovels, etc.), lunch, and refreshments will be provided.

Volunteers will be planting 800 cypress trees and wrapping the trees with protectors to shield them from predators.

Volunteers will be transported to the planting site by boat. This will be a muddy day. This is a strenuous and dirty activity, so physical fitness is required.
