CHEF JOHN BESH’S FAMILY TABLE is WYES’ new 26-part series featuring recipes from the Louisiana chef’s latest award-winning cookbook, My Family Table: A Passionate Plea for Home Cooking. This beautiful series was shot entirely on location at Chef Besh’s scenic home just outside New Orleans, which was also the setting for the photography in My Family Table. Besh is not only an award-winning chef and restaurateur but also a proud dad and storyteller.
In this new series, premiering on WYES Saturday, April 6 at 9:30 a.m. and airing nationwide this spring on Public Television Stations (check local listings), Chef Besh explores his belief that the simple act of cooking at home can change our way of life: it not only feeds a family but also nourishes and strengthens its bonds. Besh is a native son dedicated to the culinary riches of South Louisiana. He takes care to preserve and promote ingredients, techniques and heritage in all of his dishes. The acclaimed chef invites viewers into his home to show them that, by thinking ahead and thinking smart, they can put delicious food on their own family tables every single day.
Some of the recipes in the series include Grandmother’s Fried Chicken and Potato Salad, Ginger Poached Trout, Seafood Gumbo, Pork Shoulder and Sausage Jambalaya, Sloppy Joe Sliders, Crabmeat Eggplant Dressing, Grilled Tomato and Avocado Salad, Fried Catfish and Coleslaw, Creamy Heirloom Tomato Soup, Angel Biscuits, Pork Grillades, Creamy Anything Cauliflower Soup, Jalapeño Cheese Grits,Whole- Roast Salt Baked Striped Bass, Lemon Ice Box Pie, Banana Flambé, and Rice Pudding Crème Brulee – just to name a few!
This series follows Besh’s extremely successful first public television series, CHEF JOHN BESH’S NEW ORLEANS. From the outset of his career, Besh’s talent and drive have earned him continual kudos: Food & Wine named him one of the “Top 10 Best New Chefs in America,” and he won the coveted James Beard Award for Best Chef of the Southeast in 2006. His nine acclaimed restaurants (August, Besh Steak, Lüke, Lüke San Antonio, La Provence, American Sector, Soda Shop, Domenica and Borgne) each celebrate the bounty and traditions of the region in their own unique way. His flagship restaurant, August, is a Gayot Top 40 Restaurant and a Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Restaurant, in addition to being nominated in 2012 for the James Beard “Best National Restaurant” award.
Besh’s first book, My New Orleans: 200 of My Favorite Recipes and Stories from My Hometown was awarded the 2010 International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP) Award for best American cookbook. His second book, My Family Table, was also awarded the 2012 IACP award in the category of Children, Youth and Family.
The John Besh Foundation, founded in 2011, works to protect and preserve the culinary heritage and foodways of New Orleans via initiatives such as the Chefs Move! culinary school scholarship and microloans for local farmers.
Besh, the father of four, was featured on the cover of Parade magazine for Father’s Day 2012, and is a frequent guest on NBC’s “Today” show. He and his wife Jenifer live with their sons in South Louisiana.
WYES was founded in 1953 on one fundamental idea: that education could be enhanced and made available to all through technology. It was the first public television station serving Louisiana and Mississippi, the 12th in the nation, and is the most utilized non-profit organization in our two states with over a half-million people using our broadcasts, outreach activities and web site each week. It charges no fees, constructs no barriers as it strives to be the most accessible educational, artistic and cultural resource in southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
